Several studies confirm this: taking part in sport boosts productivity at work, with an increase of between 6 and 9%.
The benefits of sport on productivity
You might think that sport tires us out, that it drains our energy and that, at the same time, it leads to longer periods of rest. According to this logic, athletes would be more tired and consequently less productive in the workplace. But that is not the case at all!
On the contrary, sport has a beneficial effect on work performance:
- It stimulates the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in concentration and memory.
- It reduces the stress and anxiety that can impair productivity by making us less focused and more prone to making mistakes
- It improves overall health, which means falling ill less often and therefore having fewer absences.
Recent studies confirm that physical exercise boosts productivity
One recent study carried out by the Goodwill Management consultancy for the CNOSF (French National Olympic and Sports Committee) and the employers’ organisation Medef have shown that an office-based employee who takes up physical and sporting activity will improve their productivity by between 6 and 9%.
Another study, carried out by the University of Warwick in England, showed that employees who play sports are more productive at work and more committed to their company. They are also less likely to take time off sick.
These studies show that sport is a cost-effective investment for businesses. They therefore have every interest in encouraging sport within their organisation. To achieve this, they can offer:
- sports classes for company employees, which will also be beneficial from the point of view of team cohesion and harmony, as sport helps to facilitate social relationships.
- grants for sports activities
- areas dedicated to sport within the company, which will also serve as a way of developing its “employer brand”.
How to incorporate sport into your working life
Between work, family life and the demands of everyday life, it’s not always easy to find time for exercise. Here are a few ideas to help you fit a bit of exercise into your schedule:
- Start by doing exercise two or three times a week, with short sessions (45 minutes).
- Find a partner. Working out with a loved one, a friend or a colleague helps keep you motivated and makes it more fun.
- Use your lunch break to go for a walk or a quick workout.
Sport is an excellent way to boost your productivity at work. It is good for your physical and mental health, and it can help you stay focused, motivated and in shape. Don't hesitate to integrate sport into your working life!
