Already back in the 1930s, people were interested in ways to feel well and balanced. The Cleveland Academy of Medicine published a set of rules, drawn up by the psychiatrist Dr Joseph Fetterman, which we present to you in this article.

Have hobbies: Take an interest in and practise various activities. Sport and outdoor activities are the best.

Develop a philosophy: Whether in your social or spiritual environment, know what your values are. This aligns with the Tony Robbins quote «Try not to become a man of success. Rather, try to become a man of value.»

Share your thoughts: Confide, confess your thoughts or feelings, and converse with others.

Face your fears: Start by understanding and analysing them to better deal with them.

Balance fantasy and reality: Dreaming is good, but acting is better; have the willpower to build, to register your ideas in reality.

Beware of artificial paradises: Consuming alcohol, tobacco, or drugs will make you feel good at the time, but not in the long run.

Do some exercise: Walk, swim, run… do whatever you like, but move. The body needs activity.

Love, but wisely: Love is a flame that, if poorly controlled, can burn.

Do not let yourself be overwhelmed by worries: When a problem arises, quickly ask for help from the person who can assist you. A minor health issue? Go straight to the doctor. Money worries? Call your bank manager. Do not let things drag on.

Have confidence in the future: Be patient and optimistic, with time everything works out.
